Southgate Associates provide specialist heritage conservation services to those tasked with safeguarding and maintaining Ireland’s built heritage, whether public body or private owner. We have supervised some of the largest conservation projects undertaken in the history of the State, and many of Ireland’s most iconic buildings are on our books.
We project manage conservation works to a broad range of protected structures, including; churches, cathedrals, castles, domestic and industrial buildings, monuments, bridges, docks, ruins, farmhouses, cottages and outbuildings.
Our core conservation philosophy could be described as a commitment to a ‘minimum intervention’ model. The works undertaken emphasise maintenance and repair, and undertake the minimum job necessary. This is the best method of protection for the patina and atmosphere of old buildings, and also proves the most cost-effective strategy for our clients.
A core element of Southgate Associates work is in the provision of pre-purchase structural surveys to those attempting to buy historic/period properties. This service is provided by a chartered engineer, who is highly experienced in the conservation of heritage buildings of all descriptions.
This process can not only meet the bank requirements for a professional survey, but can also provide advice and estimates on the costs involved in any necessary works, which can assist in the decision making process on finding the best future home or business premises.
We have a variety of types of survey, from verbal advice through to a detailed conservation management plan, which will outline a long-term strategy for the conservation of a particular heritage structure.
At Southgate Associates we are very proud to have a strong multi-disciplinary flavour to our practice, and we have on staff both building archaeologists and a licensed archaeologist. This allows Southgate Associates to offer a full range of archaeological services, as dictated by the needs of any given project.
The company can provide the necessary archaeological testing, excavation and monitoring that is requested by local authority or other bodies. In addition, we offer a variety of types of archaeological services, whether geophysical surveys, GIS and Mapping Services, Environmental Impact Statements etc.
